the poster for the play born out of the RISALAT project
Il Risveglio della Cicala is a theatre piece by Sofia Novello Gergen and Margherita Monti, born out of RISALAT, a letter-writing project between Palestine and Italy run by AMEL Italia: for ten months, people in Gaza, the Occupied Territories and the Palestinian camps in Jordan and Lebanon wrote to Italians they had never met.
The play came out of that living archive of dreams, fears and questions. I made the illustration and the poster.
Two women. Two shores of the Mediterranean. A night when sleep won’t come. In a suspended, dreamlike space — physical scores, contemporary neuroses, poems, shared memories — the two of them stage love, friendship, hunger, the fear of time passing, and happiness.
One question keeps bouncing across the water: what is peace like where you are?
The piece won first prize at the fifth Spacciamo Culture Interdette festival, run by the company Chille de la balanza in Florence, and has since toured theatres across Italy.
