Artemisia Centro Antiviolenza
a website for the anti-violence centre in florence
Artemisia takes its name from Artemisia Gentileschi, the seventeenth-century painter and the first woman in history to bring a rape case to trial. Today it is the anti-violence centre in Florence, offering a hearing, support and a way out to women facing violence.
They came to me through Fabiana Bonucci Studio, who had redesigned their visual identity, to bring the site into line: the old one had become dated, scattered and hard to navigate.
I began by listening and understanding what Artemisia do, and given the depth of the project I brought in La Pivot for the design and the build, while I took on the planning and the information architecture.

The work was above all a work of order: putting requests for help and contact details first, making donations and bequests easier to reach, and reorganising a large body of projects, documents, news and archive material.
The result is a structure that is simpler to move through, and a tool Artemisia can keep up to date themselves.

A site like this carries a different responsibility: it has to be clear and immediate for someone looking for help, possibly while frightened. Here design is not decoration — it is removing every obstacle between a request for support and an answer, while building something useful to the daily work of the Centre.
Thanks to Fabiana and to everyone working at the Centre.
